For proper bourbon geeks, Old Grand Dad has been known as a hidden gem in a market full of hype, secondary prices, flippers and bourbon taters. Old Grand Dad 16 Year Review & Tasting Notes

The Old Grand Dad brand, commonly referenced as OGD, has been a longstanding value product even amongst an increasingly crowded bourbon market. With several expressions in its lineup, as we just outlined above, each has its own place. The Bonded expression with its high rye mash bill and 100-proofing is perfect for an Old Fashioned. Meanwhile, the 114 expression has a cult following of its own. Who is Old Grand Dad really though?

The bourbon brand was created way back in 1840 and is known at Jim Beam as one of “The Olds.” However, it is closely connected to a much younger whiskey brand at the same distillery. Their flagship expressions share the same mash bill, proof, and bottle. Most bourbon enthusiasts probably know who the man behind the brand is, even if they haven’t made the connection yet. He goes by the name of Basil Hayden.

Old Grand Dad 16 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is expected to feature a “distinctively classic OGD flavor and body.” Those exact tasting notes are not available at this time, however expect a spicy backbone from that high rye mash bill! It can also be assumed to expect those heavy cinnamon and baking spice notes that the brand is infamous for.

Aged in new, charred American oak barrels for 16 years in the historic warehouses of Jim Beam Distillery.

Release Date & Availability

The official release date for Old Grand Dad 16 Year bourbon is September 27 at 9am EST. This will be first available at the Jim Beam Distillery or Beam’s American Outpost in Clermont, Kentucky. Nationwide retailers will see the release happen on October 1, 2024.

Proof & ABV

The 16 Year Old Grand Dad bourbon is bottled at 100 proof. That’s an equivalent of 50% ABV.

Mash Bill

The Old Grand Dad mash bill is 63% corn, a 27% rye, and 10% malted barley. This high rye mash bill is the same as Basil Hayden’s bourbon, old grandad himself!

MSRP & Secondary Price

The suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Old Grand Dad 16 Year is $180. Secondary prices will certainly be inflated for this allocated release, so expect north of $200 in that environment. You can compare that to the Hardin’s Creek 17 Year and 110 proof for $160.

Verdict

Although today we look at Old Grand Dad as a value whiskey buy. Through its storied history, it was actually known as a premium whiskey brand even during the treacherous 1980’s American whiskey market. Today it is one of America’s best selling whiskies, with solid distribution and access all across the country. Beam-Suntory understands that bourbon drinkers are becoming more informed and this bottle release is an effort to bolster some of “The Olds” or cornerstone bourbon brands in their portfolio.
