Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfurt, Kentucky just announced the 2024 Pappy Van Winkle Whiskey Collection release. This highly anticipated annual release gives bourbon fans across the world something to dream about every fall. Pappy Van Winkle 2024 whiskey release comes with a little surprise however, even more Pappy!
Julian Van Winkle, III is a third generation Van Winkle carrying on his family’s Kentucky Bourbon tradition with grandfather’s original wheated bourbon recipe. Pappy started his journey in the 1870s and changed his family’s journey when he took a job as a salesman for the W.L. Weller & Sons liquor wholesalers. That career move led him to become the president of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville which opened in 1935.
That wheated bourbon recipe was innovative at the time and started with some brands you might recognize today, W.L.Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still. It’s taken the brand to new heights today, riding the wave of the bourbon boom. “Wheaters” as bourbon fans like to call them are as popular as ever. While some of those brands have changed hands and evolved since that time, it is hard to deny their prominence today, even in a market that is becoming more competitive by the day.
The Pappy Collection features six bottles in total, which provides a variety of age statements and price points. However, our Whiskey Bottle Caddy only holds two, so we’ve got some work to do. Nevertheless, that includes five bottles of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon, and an Old Rip Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye. That rye started as one of the first premium aged rye whiskies, and still holds up to a category of premium aged ryes that has also matured. It offers a more subtle rye spice note, due to the mash bills lower rye content.

Release Date & Availability
The release date for Pappy Van Winkle Collection is December, 2024. In theory, these vintages are on the shelves now in liquor stores, restaurants, and bars across the US. However, we know it is not that easy due to the limited supply as older aged whiskies all have to pay the Angel’s Share tax in the form of evaporation. However, this year’s release has a surplus of the two oldest expressions, 20-Year-Old and 23-Year-Old Family Reserve Bourbons.
The best chance for most fans to get their hands on one of these bottles at a fair price is through a bourbon lottery. Sometimes those come in the form of fundraisers where you’re rolling the dice with your luck. Others include lotteries offered by some liquor store retailers who hold drawings or give their most loyal customers first pick on highly allocated bottles.
“There’s an incomparable feeling of joy that comes from finding a bottle of Pappy on the shelf,” Julian Van Winkle III, brand president, said in a news release. “This season, we’re excited that connoisseurs have a greater chance to enjoy our older expressions, thanks to an exceptional yield from these barrels.”

Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10-Year-Old
The Old Rip Van Winkle Handmade Bourbon 10-Year-Old expression has a MSRP of of $129.99. It comes in at 107 proof, or 53.5% ABV. The tasting notes for Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year include a nose of oak and spice notes, with a hint of dark cherry and licorice. The palate offers up deep flavors of oak, tobacco, and sweet fruit. Fans can expect a finish of dark cherry notes, and soft tobacco.
